Hello! I'm Jon Richards, a 3D artist, game developer, and painter based in Dayton, Ohio. I am graduating from Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in Spring 2026 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Digital Arts.
My work has been featured in BGSU's annual ArtsX exhibition (2024-2025), University of the Arts (UArts)'s Lift-Off 2024: School of Design Spring Exhibition, and in an EdSurge article on integrating Unreal Engine into a history curriculum (2020).
As a 3D artist and game developer, I am most interested in technical art as a bridge between programming and purely artistic work. I enjoy using problem solving skills to streamline workflows and build custom tools. I started working with game engines when I used Unreal Engine 4 to build a virtual museum (see above!) for a high school history class, which hooked me on the idea of working on games for a living. Eventually, I became a founding officer and the lead environment artist of the UArts Game Development Studio, where I led a small team of artists to develop assets for an annual game development project.
Within my paintings, I work with gritty texture and bold complementary color schemes to elevate uninhabited mundane spaces. I am drawn to rusted pipes, "landlord" paint jobs, and unfinished ceilings. I see oil painting as a means of refuge from working in primarily digital media, but also a means of further developing my visual language overall.
When I am not creating art, I am often reading horror novels or helping friends with technology issues.
